Photovoltaic energy has solidified its position as the main source of electricity generation in Spain, surpassing both wind and nuclear power for the second consecutive month.
According to data from Red Eléctrica, the national electricity system operator, solar photovoltaic energy generated 4,791 GWh during the month of June, representing 22.2% of the total electricity produced in Spain. This figure consolidates photovoltaic’s leading position, which had already reached the top spot in May.
Wind energy, with 4,414 GWh and 20.5% of the mix, and nuclear energy, with 4,349 GWh and 20% of the total, were relegated to second and third place, respectively.
Overall, renewable energies reached a share of 58.7% in June, slightly lower than in May. However, when including nuclear, clean technologies that do not emit CO2 accounted for 78.8% of the electricity mix, a figure very close to 80%.
This milestone marks an important step in Spain’s energy transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model. Solar photovoltaic energy has become a key component in this process, and its continued growth indicates that it will continue to play a fundamental role in the country’s energy future.
